Ronnie Golden, real name Tony De Meur, died peacefully yesterday afternoon at his home while his film producer partner Grace Carley was out walking their dog. Carley confirmed the news on Monday, saying he 'simply slipped away' without pain or suffering. The London-born comedian and musician first rose to fame as vocalist and guitarist with new-wave band The Fabulous Poodles in 1975, who toured with Meat Loaf, Tom Petty and Chuck Berry.

Golden appeared in episode two of 'The Young Ones' alongside Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson, hanging upside-down from the ceiling as Buddy Holly.

He later featured in 'Spitting Image', the satirical puppet show that drew 15 million viewers at its peak.

Musical comedian Steve Gribbin called him a 'comedy legend' and 'excellent musician' with 'a rare and incandescent passion' for music.
