Graphic designer Gareth Howat and illustrator Rebecca Sutherland jointly created the five-stamp set, depicting Mary and Joseph's journey, the infant Jesus, an angel, shepherds and the Three Wise Men. Sutherland, a childhood stamp collector, called the commission "a career highlight" and said being asked to create a set herself "feels incredibly special." Royal Mail is urging customers to post early, with key deadlines of 18 December for second class and 21 December for first class.

The 60-year tradition began with a 1966 children's art competition announced by Postmaster General Tony Benn.

Royal Mail is also releasing Armistice Day stamps on 11 November, marking 110 years since the Battle of the Somme.

David Gold of Royal Mail said the stamps aim to add "an extra touch of festive magic" to millions of greetings.
