Secretary of State Marco Rubio is due to tour Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries complex in Gujarat, which can process about 1.4 million barrels a day. Washington is pressing New Delhi to cut its Russian oil imports. Rubio called India a 'refining superpower' able to handle heavy crude. He says Reliance can take more Venezuelan oil as output rises.
Rubio said the India-US trade deal is weeks away, with '99% of the work' done.
'Countries fight wars over energy,' Rubio warned, citing threats to Hormuz and the Red Sea.
In Mumbai he also met billionaire Gautam Adani, whose US bribery charges were dropped in August.
