Trump puts Russia sanctions on a '60-day pause' after waiving the law Congress passed, Rubio says
'A lot of you don't know what my decision is yet,' Donald Trump told reporters at Mar-a-Lago, a day after signing the waiver. Marco Rubio said the President wants time to study what the penalties would do to the US economy. Tariffs of 100% on the five biggest buyers of Russian oil and gas were due to start on Sunday. Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev hailed the move as 'truly historic'.
Republican Thom Tillis called it 'beyond irresponsible' and 'doing a solid for Vladimir Putin'.
Volodymyr Zelensky warned that 'financial rewards for Putin' only encourage more attacks.
US petrol hit $4.31 a gallon, up nearly 45% since the Iran war began.
