Russell Brand's barrister tells his rape trial jury that journalists 'poisoned the well of justice', as Brand denies all charges
Russell Brand leaving Southwark Crown Court in October, as Ryder Cup winner Bernard Gallacher sat beside him in the public gallery throughout Monday's closing speeches.
Brand's barrister Ian Winter KC told Southwark Crown Court that journalists and the Channel 4 documentary had prompted the complainants to come forward, arguing this had tainted the case irreparably. Winter told jurors that Brand, 51, "had an immense amount of sex" but insisted "none of it was unlawful", and asked whether they could be sure that, out of the many women who voluntarily slept with him, he raped "just three of them".
Winter dismissed the absence of screaming from victims, and said Brand is not 'a psychopath who rapes people and thinks it's normal.'
Brand arrived at court supported by his wife Laura Gallacher and her father, Ryder Cup-winning golfer Bernard Gallacher, 77.
Brand denies three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one charge of attempted indecent assault allegedly spanning 1999 to 2009.
