Russell Brand says it is a 'day for truth and justice' as he prepares to give evidence at his rape trial
Russell Brand, 51, who told police across four interviews that rape and sexual assault allegations against him stemmed from consensual encounters "invented or reimagined" by accusers.
Russell Brand, 51, arrived at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday and declared it a 'day for truth and justice' ahead of taking the witness stand in his rape and sexual assault trial. The jury has already heard his police interviews, in which he maintained that his 'very promiscuous' celebrity past had been 'unfavourably reframed' into allegations he dismisses as fabrications. Brand denies three counts of rape, three of sexual assault and one of attempted indecent assault, with the offences alleged to involve six women across a decade spanning 1999 to 2009.
Brand told officers he had kissed 'hundreds' of fans and had sex 'in countless locations', but insisted encounters were 'friendly, consensual and warm'.
The judge has already directed the jury to find Brand not guilty on one indecent assault charge, ruling there was 'insufficient evidence'.
Brand claimed the women's accounts were 'invented or reimagined' after police and media 'publicly invited additional allegations'.
