Russia fires ballistic missiles and jet drones at Kyiv as Patriot stocks run dangerously low

Russia struck Kyiv with ballistic missiles and fast-flying jet-powered drones overnight on Tuesday, continuing a relentless bombardment that Ukraine's depleted air defences are struggling to contain. Ukraine's Patriot interceptor stocks are critically low, largely because of the Iran war, leaving ballistic missiles able to punch through. Ukraine said two ballistic missiles were shot down overnight, suggesting a small fresh Patriot delivery had recently arrived.
Monday's daytime strike on Kyiv's 19th-century National Academy of Sciences killed at least one person and injured 19, with staff forced to escape burning upper floors on ladders.
Academy president Anatoliy Zagorodny, standing outside the blazing building, said: 'This is an attack on science. It is terrorism.'
Russia's new jet drones fly too fast and high for ground-based defences to intercept, and Zelensky has admitted Ukraine can now stop only just over half of them.
