Russia kills 26 in 'double-tap' bombing of a Ukrainian school used as an aid hub, a day after Melania Trump's truce ended
Rubble-strewn ground at Komyshuvakha, in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region, where Russian drones repeatedly forced rescue teams to suspend operations throughout the night after the initial strikes.Volodymyr Zelenskyy's post on X showing the aftermath of the Komyshuvakha attack, which he condemned as a "vile terrorist strike", warning that Russia could not have been unaware civilians gathered at the school weekly to collect aid.
Russia struck the village of Komyshuvakha in the Zaporizhzhia region with at least nine 3,000kg guided bombs in a deliberate 'double-tap' attack, dropping nine further bombs on the shelter after the initial strike sent survivors scrambling for cover. Among the 26 confirmed dead were two rescuers — Denys Konovalenko and Oleksy Sushchevsky, both 44 — and four police officers, with around 20 people still missing and the death toll expected to climb.
The attack came the day after a Melania Trump-brokered ceasefire in Kherson expired, extinguishing hopes that the evacuation of Oleshky might open the door to wider peace efforts.
Zelenskyy condemned it as a 'vile terrorist strike', arguing Russia 'could not have been unaware' that civilians gathered at the school each week to collect aid, and cautioned that further Russian escalation lay ahead as Ukraine's missile stocks continue to dwindle.
Throughout the night, Russian drones targeted the same bombed area, repeatedly forcing rescue teams to suspend their operations.
