Russia's Africa Corps helps Mali retake Kidal as Tuareg rebels flee 'disproportionate' air campaign

Mali's military junta has recaptured Kidal, a symbolic Tuareg stronghold in the country's north, after Russian Africa Corps forces deployed overwhelming aerial firepower to drive out separatist and al-Qaeda-linked fighters. The Azawad Liberation Front confirmed it had carried out a "strategic and controlled withdrawal" to preserve its forces, insisting troops entered the city without direct combat. Kidal had fallen to the rebels in April during coordinated attacks that also killed Mali's defence minister.
Russia's Africa Corps — which replaced the Wagner group in June 2025 — is now operating under direct control of Moscow's Defence Ministry, deepening Russia's grip on the Sahel.
Analysts warn the recapture is largely symbolic, not decisive — with Control Risks' Beverly Ochieng saying it "boosts army morale" after recent setbacks but won't end the jihadist or separatist threat.
Mali's army had already retaken Kidal alongside Wagner fighters in November 2023, only to lose it again five months ago.
