Sacked Swindon teacher claims his college required him to 'socially transition' a pupil against his beliefs

Maths teacher Kevin Lister was dismissed by New College Swindon in September 2022 for gross misconduct after refusing to use a 17-year-old pupil's chosen male name and pronouns. His barrister, Anna Loufti, argued the college's pronoun policy had a 'coercive' effect on him. She said he felt it was his duty to protect the student by discouraging the transition. He is challenging a Bristol tribunal ruling against him.

A 2024 tribunal found he was sacked for voicing his views in an 'objectionable' manner.

Jude Shepherd, representing the college, told the hearing that Lister wrote the pupil's birth name on the classroom whiteboard for the whole class to see.

In posts on X, Lister has called transgender ideology a 'cult'.
