Sadiq Khan says banning cars from Oxford Street tomorrow will rid it of 'dross' American candy shops

Westminster council has raised concerns that closing almost a kilometre of Oxford Street to vehicles on Monday will force traffic onto neighbouring side streets. The stretch between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street is set to be off-limits to cars, with buses, taxis, cyclists, e-scooters and pedicabs rerouted. Deliveries will be restricted to the hours between midnight and 7am. Khan, who says the date falls weeks before Christmas, claims it will 'go down in history'.

The street brings in around £3.1bn a year but has become blighted by vape and souvenir shops.

Drivers will retain the ability to cut across at Duke Street, Holles Street and New Bond Street.

Khan concedes that 'very little work' will happen before Christmas, with trees and seats to follow later.
