Sadiq Khan bans cars from Oxford Street as he vows pedestrianisation will rid the road of 'dross' American candy shops

Westminster Council has warned that once nearly a kilometre of the street closes, traffic will spill onto smaller side roads. The closure stretches from Orchard Street, near Selfridges, to Great Portland Street, taking in Oxford Circus. Buses, taxis, cyclists, e-scooters and pedicabs face diversions, and deliveries will be restricted to the midnight-to-7am window.

Khan claims the Monday start, just before Christmas, will 'go down in history'.

E-bikes and e-scooters are banned from the stretch while new cycleways are still being built.

Phone snatching, vape stores and tourist-trap discount shops have plagued the £3.1bn-a-year street.
