Neil Kinnock has declared it "obvious" that Prime Minister Andy Burnham wants to return the UK to the EU, claiming Burnham concealed that goal during the Makerfield by-election simply because securing victory was his overriding concern. The comments came hours after Barnier told Britain that freedom of movement is a "key condition" of any return, ruling out a softer arrangement. Emily Thornberry, meanwhile, has urged Burnham to put EU membership in Labour's next manifesto outright, without putting it to a referendum.
Burnham told MPs on Monday the post-Brexit "status quo is not good enough" and a Brussels summit on November 20 could deliver a £10 billion-a-year boost.
Labour MP Jonathan Hinder warned reopening Brexit "would not be good for our politics", saying voters outside London still feel Westminster treats them with contempt.
Sadiq Khan called Brexit the "biggest act of economic self-harm in the history of our country" and demanded immediate steps to deepen ties with the EU.
