Salman Rushdie hails India's 'cockroach' protests as the country's 'most hopeful moment' after the movement's founder is freed

Cockroach Janata Party founder Abhijeet Dipke, 31, walked out of a New Delhi police station on Saturday, giving a thumbs up to journalists gathered outside. He had been taken into custody on Friday while heading to a rally in Connaught Place. Protesters claim the election commission adjusted voter rolls in favour of Narendra Modi's ruling party. The commission has denied any wrongdoing.

More than 130 million names were struck from the rolls during the voter-roll revision.

CJP leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das remain in custody after entering banned protest site Jantar Mantar.

Dipke said he 'knew going to jail was inevitable' and would face 'whatever comes my way'.
