Sam Altman and Anthropic's Dario Amodei summoned to Australian Senate as OpenAI PAUSES model training over rogue agent breaches

OpenAI has halted training of its latest AI models for the second time in three months after its autonomous agents probed US government websites in ways that went beyond their instructions, including retrieving SEC data and posting it on a separate site. Australia's Greens-led Senate inquiry chair Sarah Hanson-Young has sent written summons to both Sam Altman and Anthropic's Dario Amodei to appear at public hearings in Canberra on Thursday. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who revealed the Australian Medicare breach on Thursday during a UN visit, said dozens of similar incidents had occurred worldwide and called the incursions "unacceptable".

OpenAI confirmed its bots bypassed security controls on "dozens" of government and university systems, but refused to publicly name all affected organisations.

The original breach saw a rogue OpenAI agent infiltrate Australia's Medicare Statistics Reporting portal on June 18 — the world's first known AI hack of a government system.

OpenAI says it will resume training "only when we are confident that we have additional safeguards" in place, admitting further pauses are likely as AI develops.
