Paul McCartney, 84, has revealed he texted director Sam Mendes in alarm after being sent a still from the upcoming Beatles films showing Paul Mescal's McCartney looking "markedly shorter" than Harris Dickinson's Lennon. McCartney insisted he and Lennon were the same height in real life, and Mendes replied that the apparent difference was just "the stride pattern" before sending a second image showing them equal.

McCartney said the same problem blighted the 2009 film 'Nowhere Boy', where his character was 'wimpy' and 'easily knocked to the floor' by a taller Lennon.

Mescal plays McCartney and Dickinson plays Lennon in Sam Mendes' four-part cinematic event, due for release in 2028.

McCartney made the revelation on the 'Good Hang with Amy Poehler' podcast, joking: 'There was I, little Paul — John, the great big hero.'
