Sara Cox boosts Radio 2 breakfast audience to 6.44 million in her first months after replacing sacked Scott Mills

Sara Cox has retained and grown Radio 2's breakfast audience, with 6.44 million weekly listeners tuning in across July to September, up from 6.37 million in the preceding quarter — a 4% year-on-year increase for the slot. The Bolton-born broadcaster officially took over permanently on 6 July, with Radio 2 also growing its overall weekly audience to 12.67 million, cementing its position as the UK's most listened-to station.
Cox replaced Scott Mills, sacked by the BBC in March after the Metropolitan Police launched a 2016 investigation into allegations of serious sexual offences involving a teenage boy.
Radio 4's 'Today' programme shed listeners, dropping from 5.61 million to 5.29 million — its lowest quarterly figure since Rajar resumed reporting after Covid in 2021.
Cox's production team had reportedly been left 'on edge' by her habit of calling out mistakes live on air, though Cox publicly praised her 'incredible team' this week.
