Matilda Stacey, 13, from Morpeth in Northumberland, had two strokes after US doctors sent her home with antibiotics, and UK nurses initially dismissed her leg numbness as a dead leg. Her condition collapsed rapidly after returning from holiday in August 2024, leaving her unable to eat, drink, or lift her head without agony.

Matilda told nurses her left leg had gone numb, but staff waved it off before her speech became jumbled the next day.

Violent spasms took hold of her right side while her left side remained unresponsive — her mother Kimberly called it 'terrifying'.

Matilda first knew something was wrong because, she said, 'it wasn't a normal headache — it was constant.'
