The amber alert runs from 1am to 10am on Friday across Cornwall, Devon, Plymouth and the Isles of Scilly. Forecasters say power cuts and damage to buildings are likely, with huge waves expected to hurl beach debris onto seafronts and coastal roads. Met Office chief forecaster Neil Armstrong warned that falling trees still in leaf could block roads and railways. Storm Boelo is expected to hit northern Britain on Saturday.
Yellow wind warnings stretch across Wales and southern England, with 70mph gusts forecast.
Eastbourne is to close sections of its seafront, and Horsham has cancelled its fireworks night.
