Search continues for missing crew member after French fighter jet crashes in a fireball near Nancy, killing one
The Mirage 2000D was carrying a 'young pilot in training' and a 'highly experienced' weapons systems officer. During a Tuesday night training mission, Nancy air base abruptly lost radio and radar contact with the two-seater. Colonel David Pappalardo stated that 'at least one of the crew members was unable to eject'. The identity of the recovered body has not yet been released.
Drone searches located the first wreckage around 4am, between Rogeville and Tremblecourt.
Investigators have opened a judicial inquiry into the cause of the crash.
The Air Force described it as an 'exceptional accident', with a press conference scheduled for Wednesday.
