Rescued beluga dies at SeaWorld San Diego two months after leaving Canada's Marineland, the FIFTH such whale to die
Six beluga whales are flown from Marineland, the now-closed Niagara Falls theme park whose belugas made the 2,500-mile journey to the US in August — one of whom, Cyprus, has since died at SeaWorld San Diego.Cyprus, a nine-year-old male beluga, refused food for two days before dying on Sunday; a necropsy will be submitted to US regulator NOAA.
Cyprus, a nine-year-old male beluga, refused food in the two days leading up to his death on Sunday. An ultrasound showed abnormal intestinal function, pointing to a life-threatening condition. Veterinarians kept watch through the night but could not save him. Four other belugas rescued from the shuttered Niagara Falls park have already died at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium.
Cyprus and fellow belugas Xavier and Jasper arrived from Marineland on August 22.
SeaWorld insists Cyprus had been 'doing well' and was eating consistently before he collapsed.
Necropsy findings will go to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
