Nationals senator Bridget McKenzie told a Senate committee that metadata places the document on the Prime Minister's department IT system. Senior official Pauline Sullivan said she had never seen it and could neither confirm nor deny. The file carried the name of Anthony Albanese's deputy communications director. It went to reporters after Haines criticised a $6million Marrickville Golf Club grant.

Senator David Pocock called Albanese's defence of the file 'not good enough'.

Albanese insisted the file merely showed that 'people of integrity stand up for their electorate'.

Brendan Nugent, 43, is accused of deliberately hitting Haines with his four-wheel drive.
