Senior Derbyshire detective faces gross misconduct probe over claims AI was used to make decisions and assess risk

A further allegation holds that the detective entered confidential operational details and personal case information into the AI tool. Derbyshire Police referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct on 23 June following an internal review, and the watchdog launched its inquiry in August. Emily Barry, the IOPC's director of engagement, described them as 'serious allegations'. The detective has been served a gross misconduct notice.
Derbyshire Police authorised Microsoft Copilot in May 2025, but solely for drafting reports and summaries.
Officers were given explicit instructions not to enter operational, sensitive or personal data into the system.
Investigators will scrutinise the detective's use of Copilot across the period from May 2025 to June 2026.
