Senior NHS doctors on up to £150,500 a year are to strike for two days in November over pay
NHS consultants earning up to £150,500 a year will strike for two days from 25 November, the BMA says, after a ballot backed action on a bare-minimum legal turnout.
Consultants received a 3.5% pay rise this year, though the BMA contends that over 17 years their pay has dropped by a quarter. The strike starts at 06:59 GMT on 25 November and will cover emergency services only. Health Secretary Yvette Cooper described the action as 'irresponsible'. The ballot produced a 76% vote in favour on a turnout that only just met the legal minimum.
BMA co-chairs Dr Helen Neary and Dr Shanu Datta say ministers 'kicked the can down the road'.
The only meeting ministers offered is on 5 November, after the budget, the BMA says.
