Seven people aged between 15 and 26 fired rockets at shoppers and officers on Corporation Street and Stephenson Street on Halloween. Witnesses reported children screaming as security guards closed doors to contain the panic. West Midlands Police issued a Section 60 stop-and-search order lasting until the early hours of Sunday, giving officers authority to stop and search individuals without requiring specific grounds. All seven detainees face suspicion of assault, possession of fireworks, and possession of an offensive weapon.

Chief Superintendent Tom Joyce warned that misusing fireworks 'can lead to fines, arrest and criminal charges'.

Police had increased patrols ahead of Halloween and Bonfire Night after previous years saw fireworks used against officers.

Extended Section 60 powers were imposed across Birmingham city centre, Sparkbrook and Soho Road from 5pm Sunday until 1am Monday.
