Shabana Mahmood is set to dilute her migrant crackdown and spare care workers a 15-year wait after a Labour revolt

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is expected to announce next week that social care workers already living in the UK will be exempted from her proposed 15-year wait for permanent settlement, caving to a cabinet revolt led by Housing Secretary Angela Rayner. Over half a million migrant workers currently make up around a third of the adult social care workforce. The climbdown follows a public consultation that drew more than 200,000 responses and warnings that the original plans risked repeating the Windrush scandal.

Most other foreign workers will still face a doubled 10-year residency wait, up from the current five years, before qualifying for indefinite leave to remain.

Angela Rayner branded the original plans 'un-British' for changing conditions for migrants who had already moved to the UK in good faith, with opposition thought to extend beyond the 100 MPs who signed a formal protest letter.

The retreat comes as nearly 1,000 migrants crossed the Channel in just 48 hours, including violent scenes on board one vessel filmed this morning.
