Shabana Mahmood rebukes MP who claimed Sally Rooney is 'a writer, not a terrorist' over Palestine Action cash pledge

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood told independent MP Shockat Adam he should be 'much more responsible' in the Commons. Adam had questioned whether she regards every author whose views she opposes as a terrorist. Mahmood said there was 'a world of difference' between enjoying book sales and funding a proscribed group. Sally Rooney has pledged her royalties and BBC adaptation earnings to Palestine Action.

Adam asked whether Andy Burnham's new government would reverse the Palestine Action ban.

Supporting the group carries up to 14 years in jail since MPs proscribed it last July.

Rooney, 35, says further UK publication could be a 'serious criminal offence', so Faber has stopped selling her novels here.
