Sharks attack survivors of a capsized boat off Mexico's Baja California coast as 11 people remain missing

Sixteen Mexican nationals were pulled from the ocean off Baja California on Friday, a number of them with serious wounds consistent with shark bites. Coast Guard personnel performed emergency first aid on the aircraft as survivors were flown to San Diego. Customs and Border Protection has since begun interviewing those rescued. The boat went down in an area the US Coast Guard has identified as a known smuggling corridor; survivors said there had been 27 people on board.

The distress call was received at approximately 1am on Friday, according to Coast Guard Lt. Santiago Tamburini.

US Coast Guard and Navy vessels and aircraft, alongside the Mexican Navy, are continuing search operations.

Survivors who witnessed a crime may be eligible for humanitarian parole allowing them to remain in the US.
