Sheffield Greens defy Labour's ultimatum to condemn 'Zionism is racism' policy, putting coalition at risk

Sheffield's Green group has flatly refused Labour's demand to denounce the Green Party's 'Zionism is racism' conference motion, throwing the city's joint administration into serious doubt. Labour chair Bridget Phillipson directed Labour groups across 17 local authorities to tear up power-sharing deals unless Green partners formally repudiate the policy within seven days. Sheffield Green Group leader Angela Argenzio warned that collapsing the administration would be "disastrous for the city." Andy Burnham ruled out any future "partnership" with the Greens at PMQs this week, marking the government's clearest break yet with the party.
Lewisham's Green mayor Liam Shrivastava has also stayed silent, despite Labour repeatedly pressing him — while his own cabinet member for communities is listed as an official supporter of the motion.
UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese was condemned after praising the Greens for "doing something extremely human" in adopting the policy, though she added she did not think it was their most strategic move.
Jewish councillor Sharone Parnes wrote an open letter demanding Green colleagues clarify whether they remain committed to the IHRA definition of antisemitism and would treat Jewish, Israeli and Zionist residents fairly.
