Sir Patrick Stewart died at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday, aged 86, following what his family described as "a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer's Disease and Lewy body dementia" — a condition he had not previously disclosed publicly.

His lifelong friend Sir Ian McKellen revealed that he had advised Stewart against accepting the Star Trek role that launched him to global stardom.

Stewart's estranged son Daniel broke his silence with a wordless Instagram post — a piggyback photo from their 2001 stage production together.

Stewart had spoken in one of his final interviews of "significant grief" over his "practically non-existent" relationship with Daniel and daughter Sophie.
