Sleeping Sacramento driver, 22, put Tesla in Full Self-Driving mode and crashed into a California Highway Patrol car, injuring two officers

A 22-year-old Sacramento man told investigators he was asleep at the wheel when his Tesla, running in Full Self-Driving mode, ploughed into a California Highway Patrol Dodge Charger at freeway speed on Interstate 80 near Fairfield late on Tuesday night. Dashcam footage released by the CHP captured the moment of impact. Both officers suffered serious injuries but are recovering, while the driver escaped with minor injuries.

CHP had closed four lanes with flares, cones and emergency lights — the Tesla drove through the closure regardless.

'Technology does not relieve drivers of their responsibility to safely operate their vehicles,' CHP warned after the crash.

Authorities have not yet announced what charges the driver may face, and the incident remains under investigation.
