South Africa sends 510 troops to KwaZulu-Natal after a court ruling easing asylum rules sparks anti-migrant violence in Durban

President Cyril Ramaphosa authorised the deployment as part of Operation Prosper, a joint police-military effort that also targets gang violence and illegal mining. Timed to coincide with South Africa's 4 November local elections, the operation runs until late November and will cost around 34 million rand. Last week in Durban, a mob of roughly 50 people marching through the city beat a foreign national to death.
