South Korean police raise Incheon mall stabbing victim count to 10 as ex-con on ankle tag is held
The 59-year-old attacker had previously been convicted of attempting to murder his ex-wife before carrying out Tuesday's assault, which left a woman in her 20s in cardiac arrest.
South Korean police have raised the victim count from Tuesday's stabbing at an Incheon shopping complex to 10. The 59-year-old suspect had knives strapped to both hands and more than ten additional blades in his bag; bystanders threw chairs at him before officers arrived. One woman in her twenties went into cardiac arrest and was rushed into emergency surgery. President Lee Jae-myung visited Incheon police that evening and urged measures to stop similar incidents.
The suspect had previously served four years for attempted murder and was wearing an electronic ankle tag — required until February 2029 — at the time of the attack.
The Justice Ministry confirmed he had been under electronic supervision since 2019, regularly received psychiatric treatment and attended an addiction counselling session just hours before the rampage.
Bystander Nah Hyun-joon said the suspect was blocked from reaching a fourth-floor cinema by people holding chairs and was pushed back down before having his knives removed.
