Wage growth of 3.9 per cent outpaced September's 3.5 per cent inflation, securing pensioners a £489 increase worth £250.70 a week. The Government has said that pensioners living solely on the state pension will not face an income tax liability, but has yet to set out how that will be delivered. Chancellor John Healey is expected to confirm the new rates at the Budget on October 28. Prime Minister Andy Burnham intends to scrap the triple lock from April 2030.

Pensioners with workplace or private pensions could face higher tax bills.

The old basic state pension will rise £7.20 a week to £192.10.

Kemi Badenoch has attacked Burnham's intention to reduce the state pension's value by 2030.
