'Sexually obsessed' stepfather who murdered student, 19, then went shopping with her mother is jailed for at least 35 years
Carla Georgescu, whose body was found at Ribble Hall on what would have been her 20th birthday, was allegedly killed by Nathan Owens, driven by a "dangerously entrenched sexual obsession" with her.
Mr Justice Jacobs branded Nathan Owens, 34, "despicable" for staging Carla Georgescu's death to give the impression she had died by suicide. Owens drove 100 miles from Hartlepool to her Preston halls of residence on the pretext of retrieving a purse, then went calmly around Asda with her mother, Janina, afterwards. He showed no remorse and was handed a life sentence at Preston Crown Court, with a minimum term of 35 years.
Owens had already admitted doctoring Carla's childhood photos into indecent images.
Carla, a psychology student, was due to fly to Romania to meet her first boyfriend.
The judge said "the last 90 minutes of Carla's life are too horrendous to think about."
