'Still no answers': Daughter of murdered MP Sir David Amess demands public inquiry into father's murder five years on

Katie Amess, 41, says she still has "so many unanswered questions" five years after her father Sir David Amess was stabbed to death by Islamist terrorist Ali Harbi Ali at a constituency surgery in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex. The government has commissioned an independent review led by former justice secretary Sir Robert Buckland KC, but Katie insists only a full public inquiry — where witnesses can be compelled to give evidence — will deliver real accountability. She called the five-year fight for answers "just absolutely heartbreaking and completely traumatising", saying she should never have had to plead her case.
Ali Harbi Ali, who received a whole life order in 2022, had been referred to the Prevent anti-radicalisation scheme but his case was closed in 2016 — five years before the attack.
Katie described Ann Widdecombe, who was killed at her Devon home in July, as "a great source of strength and a beacon of hope" to her family in their darkest days.
'Still, five years later, I'm having to plead my case as to why my dad, myself, and the public needs these answers,' Katie said.
