A section of Brighton's historic West Pier has fallen into the sea, and gusts of 111mph have been recorded in Cornwall. More than 16,000 homes in the south west were without power by late morning. Heathrow cancelled 19 flights and Gatwick 17, while Jersey shut all its schools and colleges. Storm Boelo is expected to bring amber warnings to Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England from Saturday night.
Drivers in Devon and Cornwall reported overturned vans, fallen power cables and trees down.
Both Austen and Boelo have reportedly undergone explosive cyclogenesis, known as a 'weather bomb'.
