The amber alert covers Cornwall, Devon, Plymouth and the Isles of Scilly from 1am to 10am on Friday. Gusts of 60-70mph are expected across the region, with 80mph possible on exposed headlands. Met Office chief forecaster Neil Armstrong warned that 'with trees in leaf' fallen branches could block roads and railways, and advised commuters to take particular care on Friday morning.

Eastbourne seafront is shutting, and Horsham's Fireworks Night on Saturday has been cancelled.
