Strangers who raced at 90mph from traffic lights are jailed for killing a mother and daughter, four, in Leeds

Jasskamal Riyat, 37, and Hardeep Bhachu, 29, were sentenced at Leeds Crown Court on Monday after Bhachu's Audi TT RS mounted the pavement on Scott Hall Road at 89mph in a 40mph zone, killing Justyna Hulboj, 27, and her daughter Lena Czepczor, four, on 16 January 2023. Riyat received 16 years and Bhachu 12 years, a combined 28-year sentence. The pair had never met before accelerating away from the same traffic lights moments before the fatal crash.
Judge Ray Singh told the men: 'A road is not a race track — a powerful car is not an invitation to test its limits.'
Justyna's fiancé Dominik Czepczor said in a victim impact statement: 'My whole world collapsed in one second.'
Bhachu admitted the charges; Riyat denied racing and was convicted by a jury.
