A student opened fire on a group of people gathered outside İnci Üzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Turgutlu, Manisa province, shortly after 8am local time on Tuesday, injuring eight. Witnesses described the gunman as firing 'at random'. Two of those wounded are in a critical condition.

The shooting follows two deadly school attacks in April that prompted Turkey to strengthen its gun laws before the start of the new academic year.

Video footage and photographs shared online showed the suspect carrying a rifle near the school before he was detained.

Before the April incidents, Turkey had no notable history of school shootings.
