Superfan who asked Prince William to sing 'Purple Rain' after mistaking him for pop star Prince writes an apology

Sebastian Smith, a 22-year-old with the rare chromosomal disorder Rubinstein-Taybi Syndrome, wrote a letter to Prince William after his innocent mix-up at Sweet Surprise café in Ilminster, Somerset, went global. His mother Claire said Sebastian had no idea who William was but is a devoted Prince fan who can name every song and lyric. The family were stunned when their son's brief exchange became a worldwide talking point after William shared it on the BBC.

William told the story on The Graham Norton Show on October 23, sitting beside Cate Blanchett, Hannah Waddingham and Robert Irwin.

The Prince joked he didn't know the lyrics to 'Purple Rain' after Sebastian asked him 'When are you going to sing?'

Despite writing to apologise, Sebastian's family say he is 'loving all the attention' and his mum is only surprised he didn't hug the future king.
