Man is charged over car attack that cost Australian MP Helen Haines a leg, and his family call her a FRIEND

Brendan Nugent, 43, allegedly did a U-turn in his Toyota LandCruiser before hitting Helen Haines twice outside her Murphy Street office in Wangaratta, Victoria. The 65-year-old independent MP was pinned between two cars while unloading her boot. Surgeons at Melbourne's Alfred hospital are now fighting to save her other leg. Nugent is due to appear at Wangaratta Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

Nugent's father, Rod, called it a 'shocking and horrific crime' against a much-loved friend.

Barber Ricky Jefferies hauled the suspect from the car and took a knife from his pocket.

One charge, harming a Commonwealth public official, carries up to 10 years in prison.
