Susan Sarandon was handcuffed and led away by NYPD officers during a sit-in that blocked First Avenue near the United Nations, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered his address to the General Assembly just blocks away. A total of 103 protesters were arrested after police moved to clear traffic. 'Hacks' actress Hannah Einbinder, comedian Caleb Hearon, author Glennon Doyle, and New York congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier were also among those detained.
Protesters wore white T-shirts reading 'Fund people not bombs' and chanted 'Free Palestine' outside the UN.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani had urged Netanyahu's arrest before the visit, citing an ICC warrant for war crimes — though the US is not a member of the court.
Sarandon was dropped by her talent agency in 2023 after saying pro-Palestine protesters were getting 'a taste of how it feels to be Muslim in this country.'
