Suspect is arrested after fire engulfs Hitler's 'Eagle's Nest' retreat in Germany while 200 firefighters battle the blaze

Bavarian police arrested the suspect during the blaze at the Kehlsteinhaus and have launched a criminal investigation into any possible connection to the fire. Dispatchers in Traunstein received the alarm at 21:15 on Friday, and crews arrived to find the building fully alight. Rugged mountain terrain complicated the firefighting effort, and flames were still active into Saturday morning. No injuries have been reported.

Hitler used the retreat to brief his commanders on plans for the 1941 invasion of the USSR.

Built in 1938, the structure came through 1945 intact and today operates as a mountain inn.

Its official website describes it as a 'cautionary reminder' of the Nazi dictatorship.
