Suspect is to be freed under Labour's early release scheme around the anniversary of Henry Nowak's murder
Henry Nowak, the Southampton University student whose killer's mother is expected to walk free under Labour's early release scheme having served less than half her three-year sentence.Kiran Kaur, the mother of Henry Nowak's killer, who faces deportation to India and a Court of Appeal challenge to her sentence on 5 November, weeks before her scheduled early release.
Kiran Kaur, 53, was jailed for three years for disposing of the knife her son Vickrum Digwa used to kill student Henry Nowak. She is now set for early release in December, having served less than a third of her sentence. Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones called the move 'quite shocking' and wrote to Justice Secretary Alex Norris demanding clarity. As an Indian national, Kaur may face deportation after her release, though a decision on that has not yet been made.
Jones warned the early release 'is going to be a significant blow for Henry's family' and raises 'very serious questions about the robustness of our criminal justice system'.
Kaur is appealing her sentence at the Court of Appeal on November 5 — the same day her son Digwa appeals his life term and the Attorney General challenges it as too lenient.
At Kaur's sentencing in July, the judge said that any responsible parent would have encouraged her son 'to do the right thing' — yet she concealed the knife within a larger weapons collection in his bedroom.
