Sutton Trust founder Sir Peter Lampl quits London for America, blaming Sadiq Khan's LTNs as the 'clinching factor'

Sir Peter Lampl, who donated more than £65 million to education charity the Sutton Trust, says London's low-traffic neighbourhoods made it impossible to carry out his charitable work. Having built his fortune in private equity, he relocated from Britain last year after deciding the capital had become unnavigable by car. He writes that in America, people who need to travel by car are "not treated entirely as pariahs."

Sir Peter warned it is a "mass exodus," saying more and more wealthy individuals have reached the same conclusion and quit Britain.

He blamed cycle lanes, 20mph limits and the growth of low-traffic neighbourhoods under Sadiq Khan for making cross-city journeys impossible.

Getting quickly from one meeting to the next had underpinned decades of both business activity and social-mobility campaigning, he said — and LTNs put an end to that.
