Swansea hospital restricts visitors after scabies cases are confirmed, following outbreaks at two other Welsh hospitals since July

Swansea Bay University Health Board has confirmed scabies cases at Morriston Hospital, with visiting restrictions now in force to contain the parasitic skin infection. Patients, staff and relatives have been informed and are receiving appropriate treatment or guidance. The mite-borne infection, which causes intense itching and a blotchy red rash, spreads rapidly through close skin contact.
This is the third Welsh hospital hit since July — crusted scabies, a rare and highly contagious strain, struck a ward at Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen, then Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli.
Dermatologist Dr Firas Al-Niaimi has warned scabies 'needs to be caught early to limit infections' because it spreads very quickly once on a ward.
Anyone concerned they may have scabies is advised to seek guidance from a local pharmacy or GP rather than attending hospital.
