Swinney declares the independence campaign 'has already begun' as he vows to deliver a breakaway Scotland for his teenage son

John Swinney's much-vaunted "six-figure war chest" for the Choose Scotland campaign turns out to begin at just £100,000, his spokesman has conceded. Speaking in Aberdeen, the First Minister took aim at Prime Minister Andy Burnham: "Scotland is no city. We are no region." Burnham has told Swinney that a second referendum is "off limits". Opponents noted that Swinney made no mention of Peter Murrell, the former SNP chief executive who is now in prison.

Support for independence has fallen from around 50% in 2021 to roughly 41% this year.

SNP membership has collapsed to around 51,000, down from a peak of 125,000 in 2019.

The SNP still holds a £60,000 loan from Murrell, who embezzled £400,310.65 from the party.
