Taiwan shuts down and cancels nearly 1,000 flights after Typhoon Champi kills one person and injures 94

Typhoon Champi claimed one life when a person was swept away by waves off Liuqiu, a small island near Taiwan's southeastern coast, on Thursday. The storm reached a peak of 298kph earlier this week and continues to produce gusts of around 191kph. Forecaster Liu Pei-teng cautioned that landfall remains possible if the storm "stalls, loops, or wobbles." Around 1,300 residents have been moved out of mountainous areas.

Rainfall totals of up to 90cm are expected, with the northeast forecast to bear the brunt.

Amphibious vehicles and rescue boats are on standby in the northeastern county of Yilan.

In Japan, a woman in her 70s broke her leg in the winds on Miyako island.
