Taiwan shuts down and nearly 1,000 flights are cancelled as Typhoon Champi kills one and injures more than 170

The sole confirmed fatality was someone killed after being swept into the sea by storm-driven waves. Forecaster Liu Pei-teng warns a direct hit cannot be ruled out if Champi 'stalls, loops, or wobbles from side to side'. Northeastern Taiwan could see up to 90cm of rain by Saturday. Mountain communities have seen close to 1,300 residents moved to safety, with thousands of troops held in reserve.
All 262 domestic flights and 715 international services were scrapped on Friday.
Champi was briefly a super typhoon and is still gusting at around 191kph.
Suao town chief Lee Ming-chen says troops may evacuate residents in amphibious vehicles.
